Lipoma A lipoma is a slow-growing, benign growth of fat cells. It is found in a thin, fibrous capsule and is located just under the skin. A lipoma is usually not tender and moves easily with light pressure. A lipoma is not cancerous and treatment is generally not necessary. There is also a condition called Familial Lipomatosus, in which people develop multiple lipomas, especially on the arms and legs; other family members may also develop these growths. If lipoma is in the pressure bearing area, it can create discomfort and that is when people seek out. People also request removal because they do not like the appearance of these bumps. Often a small incision can be made over the lipoma and they can easily be “popped out”. This is a simple surgical procedure on site under local anesthesia.
