Lipoma: what is it and how to treat it naturally?

Lipoma is a mass made up of fatty tissue. While surgery is effective, natural methods have proven to be effective.

Lipoma: what is it?

Lipoma is a benign tumor made up of fat . This is a fairly common pathology that affects men or women indifferently, more rarely children. It can occur at any age but remains more common after 40 years.

The diagnosis must be established by a general practitioner or a dermatologist who, alone, can determine whether the lump is a lipoma. He may order a biopsy to make sure it is not a malignant tumor .

What is a fat ball?

It has been said: the lipoma is a benign tumor made up of fat. There are different kinds of lipomas but the most common is the subcutaneous lipoma which forms a ball under the skin: this "fat ball" results from the multiplication (and proliferation) of adipose cells whose role is to store fat. fats in the body.

Lipomas - that is, "fat balls" - can be located anywhere on the body: scalp , back, breast, arms, neck and even on the face. We talk about lipomatosis when a person has several lipomas on the body.

Is a lipoma painful?

In the vast majority of cases, the lipoma is asymptomatic: there are no symptoms and it is not painful. However, experts estimate that this benign fatty tumor is painful in 25% of cases: it may in particular be a question of a lipoma located near a nerve, causing nerve pain.

Warning: more rarely, we can observe the development of a neural fibrolipoma (also called fibrolipomatous hamartoma) which corresponds to the development of a lipoma in a nerve, causing pain and paresthesias - tingling ... Even more rarely (in less 1% of cases), the lipoma develops in a joint (especially in the knee) and the pain is then mechanical: it occurs during movement.

Is a lipoma cancer?

The lipoma is defined as a "non-cancerous tumor of the soft tissues": there is therefore no question of being alarmed!

On the other hand, a consultation with a dermatologist is necessary if the lipoma becomes painful, if it changes in appearance (if it grows, if it changes color or if it is deformed, for example), if it becomes the skin. touch, or if it becomes mobile (if it "rolls" under the fingers) or immobile (if it gives the impression of "sticking" to the tissues). The lipoma only becomes cancerous in very rare cases!

Surgical treatment of lipoma

Sometimes, without knowing why, the lipoma disappears on its own. Even if the lipoma is most of the time not painful, the patient may wish to have it removed for cosmetic reasons, especially if it is several centimeters. There are three options for treating lipoma:

  • performing a lipectomy , that is, removing the mass by surgery. The lipoma is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
  • liposuction is also possible but it exposes more risk of reoffending see lipoma.
  • an injection of corticosteroids directly into the lipoma, if surgery is not possible, to gradually reduce it.

Lipoma: natural treatments

The patient, after checking with a doctor that he has a lipoma, may consider other methods of treatment. It is recommended to carry out a detoxification of the liver in parallel with these treatments.

  • the essential oil of Atlas cedar : it is lypolitic, which means that it has the capacity to promote the destocking of fats. It can be combined with Rosemary essential oil, Ravintsara  essential oil and Italian Helichrysum essential oil in a 10% dilution with vegetable oil. This preparation must then be applied directly to the lipoma with a cotton swab, repeating the operation two or three times a day for two weeks.
  • a honey poultice : honey is known for its soothing but also anti-inflammatory properties. A mixture of honey and flour (in equal parts) must be applied directly to the lipoma, then the lipoma must be protected with a strip that will be left in place for 24 hours before repeating the operation until the mass has disappeared.
  • sage ointment : just mix a teaspoon of dried sage with three tablespoons of linseed oil. The preparation should then be applied directly to the lipoma. Be careful, however, of the possible interactions between linseed oil and certain treatments, in particular anticoagulants and against hypertension . It is important to seek medical advice before using it.

lipoma is a benign tumor made up of fat that usually doesn't cause any complications. It is above all embarrassing for the person affected aesthetically when it is located at the level of the skin. The origin of the formation of this type of tumor is not well known. This pathology mainly affects adults between 40 and 60 years old . Treatment, when necessary, is surgery.

It comes in the form of a soft ball to the touch. The fat present inside is exactly the same as normal subcutaneous fat. Variable in size, it can appear on different parts of the body: in particular on the neck, torso, arms or breasts , when it is a skin lipoma. But it can exist almost anywhere inside the body (stomach, lungs, brain, liver, etc.). It is a benign tumor that develops gradually. Unlike malignant tumors, cells in a lipoma do not migrate to other organs and do not metastasize. They are most often small, and 80% of them are less than 5 cm, the others do not exceed 10 cm.

Types of lipoma and their variants:

  • Subcutaneous lipomas  : tumors that look like soft balls of fat under the skin. It is the most frequent form.
  • Other benign lipomas are much less common. It can be:
    • Fibrolipomas.
    • Benign mesenchymoma.
    • Lipoblastoma: occurring in infants or children under 3 years old.
    • Pleomorphic lipoma: especially in men over 45 years old.
  • Heterotopic lipomas: these are lipomas containing fat cells associated with other types of cells, from other tissues. They may be intramuscular lipomas, arborescent lipomas, neural fibrolipomas, parosteal lipomas, etc.
  • Hibernomas  : These are lipomas formed from a particular fat, brown fat.
  • Malignant tumors of the lipoma family.
They are much rarer than benign lipomas:

    • Liposarcoma which can be well differentiated, or dedifferentiated .
    • Myxoid liposarcoma.
    • Pleomorphic liposarcoma.

When a lipoma occurs, the fat cells or adipocytes have multiplied there. The origin of this proliferation of fat-storing cells remains unexplained. The genetic factor ( heredity ) seems to play a role in their occurrence, but the trigger mechanism and other factors involved are not known. Their evolution towards spontaneous healing is also a mystery.

Some people can be suffering from lipomatosis  : in this case they have several lipomas on the body.

What are the symptoms of lipoma?

The manifestations of a lipoma can vary depending on the type of lipoma and its location. On examination, a lipoma is a ball of soft or elastic consistency, well defined, and of variable size. Sometimes the tumor is accompanied by pain. The pains are quite rare, they result from the compression of other tissues located nearby.

What is the diagnosis of lipoma?

Observation and palpation of a soft lump in an area of the body may direct the doctor or dermatologist to a lipoma. A lipoma is a mass of soft or elastic consistency and mobile in relation to surrounding structures, non-inflammatory and well delimited. When it is superficial, an ultrasound makes it possible to make a diagnosis and to know if there is a risk that it turns out to be cancerous. In the case of deep lipomas, an MRI may be necessary.

biopsy can confirm the diagnosis: a tumor fragment is taken and then analyzed.

What are the treatments for lipoma?

The choice of treatment depends on the nature of the lipoma and its location. If the lipoma does not cause any discomfort, it does not require any special treatment.
It is nevertheless advisable to monitor a lipoma that is not operated on to see if it does not grow, or if it becomes troublesome.

Treatment of a troublesome lipoma involves surgery, liposuction, or removal of the lipoma (lipectomy). When a lipoma is operated on, it is then systematically sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Liposuction causes less scarring, but it leaves the lipoma envelope in place and puts you at risk of recurrence.

In the case of numerous subcutaneous lipomas, or in the case of a person who cannot undergo surgery, an alternative is to inject corticosteroids into the lipoma so as to reduce its volume.
