Lipomas are the most common benign type of tumor that develops under the skin. Although it occurs anywhere on the body, it is commonly found on the back, shoulders, neck, etc., followed by the upper arm, buttocks, and thighs. There are various sizes ranging from small ones with a diameter of several mm to diameters over 10 cm. Usually, there are no symptoms such as pain, the skin rises in a dome shape and is touched as a soft lump. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and imaging tests. In our hospital, we perform either echo examination, CT examination, MRI examination for image examination. Treatment is surgically removed. A small, shallow lipoma is removed by a day-trip surgery. Large and deep lipomas may require hospital treatment. After excision, hemostasis is adequately performed to prevent hematoma (accumulation of blood), and a drain is inserted and compressed if necessary. Recurrence of lipomas removed in this way is rare.
A lipoma is a term that can be expressed as a "lump of fat," and while it does not grow, it can be observed (observed), but if it grows, symptoms such as pain may occur. If so, surgery is recommended. Surgery is usually removed from an incision of the same size to allow removal of the artifact, leaving a scar about the diameter of the artifact after surgery.
"Squeezing surgery" is a minimally invasive surgery that removes a powder aneurysm from the minimally necessary incision that contains a device for detaching and removing lipoma. Depending on the size of the tumor, it can be resected with an incision of 1 cm to 3 cm or less. The risk inherent to squeezing surgery is almost the same as the usual surgical method, but in very large cases the recurrence rate is a little higher than the usual method, so it is necessary to check the internal condition by MRI examination in advance and to diagnose pathology. It is important to make sure that the sample removed by the test does not have cancer.
However, squeezing surgery cannot be performed in all cases, such as when the adhesion with the surroundings is strong, so if you wish to have surgery on a small wound, please check at the time of examination.
*Effects of treatment vary depending on individual symptoms.
Most lipomas are present in the skin around the subcutaneous fat in a capsule, but very rarely they occur in muscles, between muscles, or on the surface of bones, and can be painful. It has the appearance of a normal skin color and the affected area is plump. When I touch it, I feel a little elastic lump, but there is basically no pain. It tends to grow slowly. Even if they look the same, they can be different tumors. Please feel free to visit us.
Surgery to completely remove the tumor.
Although lipomas are mostly benign tumors, we can also examine the tumors removed after surgery if the surgeon wishes this clinic.

A lipoma is a benign tumor of fat cells, as can be seen from the name of the disease, and as a symptom, it is a condition in which a soft lump with a little elasticity is touched under the skin. It usually does not hurt. The surface is a normal skin color. It tends to grow slowly, but it is sometimes expressed as a "hump" because it rises when it is formed in a hard part with bones below (forehead etc.). Some people are constitutionally prone to lipomas, and many may develop in the body.
A lipoma exists in the depth of subcutaneous fat and is covered with a capsule as shown in the figure below. The epidermis and dermis covering the surface are normal and have a normal skin color. Tumor cells are mobile to the touch because they are separated from the surrounding tissue by the capsule.
Since it is a benign tumor, it does not metastasize to internal organs and can be fatal. Therefore, it may be left untreated, but it will gradually become noticeable. Also, in some places it may start to cause pain when under pressure. If you treat it after it has grown too large, the scars of the surgery will become noticeable and the risks associated with the surgery will increase, so it is better to treat those that have reached a certain size.
It is necessary to remove all the tumor cells in order to completely cure them so that they do not recur. Surgery is the common method.
For large lipomas, liposuction may be used to reduce the size of the wound, but this is not common due to the risk of leftovers and lack of health insurance coverage.
Our hospital only has surgery. For liposuction, please consult your medical institution.
Lipomas on the shoulder
The shoulders are also very prone to lipomas. There are some patients who come to the hospital because they feel uncomfortable when moving their arms, but some people are left because they are unnoticeable.
Lipomas on the neck
The neck is one of the most prone to lipomas. However, in the case of lipomas on the neck, many patients are left alone until they are larger than those on the face. Although some people would like to avoid surgery because it is a relatively common place for people, lipomas do not disappear naturally unless they are removed by surgery.
Lipoma on face/forehead
There are many patients who are worried that scars will remain after surgery when the site of origin is the face. At the Icy Clinic, we will treat inconspicuous scars carefully.
Lipoma on the side
Similar to the case of shoulder lipoma, there are patients who come to our hospital because they feel discomfort when moving their arms, but there are also patients who are left unattended because they are unnoticeable. Surgery is required to treat lipomas. We recommend that you treat/operate before becoming large.
Lipoma on back
The back is also one of the most prone to lipomas. Lipomas are usually painless and may not be visible on the back, which is an impression that many patients start treatment after they become large enough.
Lipoma on the chest
Breast lipomas are often left behind because they are hidden behind clothes and invisible. Lipomas do not heal spontaneously, so it is advisable to see a doctor as soon as possible.
Lipoma in the abdomen
Since abdominal lipomas are usually invisible to humans, they tend to be left alone. Since lipomas only grow if left untreated, it is recommended that you visit a medical institution as soon as you notice.
Lipomas on the arm
A lipoma of the arm can be mistaken for a mere "article."
Lipoma on the waist
If the site of origin is the waist, it may be mistaken for a mere "artifact". In many cases, treatment is started after the time from discovery to treatment has become empty, and as a result, it has become larger.
Lipoma on the bottom
The buttocks are also areas where lipomas are relatively easy to form. There are some patients who come to our hospital because they feel uncomfortable when sitting.
Lipomas on the legs
Lipomas in the feet can be mistaken for just "lumps." Even if there is a lump compared to the face, it is less noticeable, and as a result, it was left alone.
After treatment of lipoma
Do you have any pain?
On the day, there is pain until the next day, but it seems that there is almost no pain for small scratches (1 cm or less). (I will prescribe oral medicine for pain relief.)
Can I take a bath?
Depending on the surgical site and the size of the wound, showering is permitted from the next day when sutured.
